How to Avoid a Data Entry Job Scam
Jun 29th, 2009
A data entry opportunity scam can target you in many ways. You can put yourself right in the path of a mailing list by filling out a form. The list is purchased and then you start to receive mailings. Once you are on the mailing list, it is hard to get your name removed.
Sites like Craigslist are a easy target for these data entry job scams. They are listed among jobs that are legitimate. The jobs are posted by your city and state. As soon as they get your information they add you to the mailing list that is eventually sold. The list will be sold more than once because they do not care how many mailings you receive.
A few things to consider when posting for a job on Craigslist is:
- Look for information that shows the posting is local and not cut and pasted by someone who doesn’t live there. Job postings contain some information that will key you in to what part of town they are in. Job posting employers give the part of town to save your time and theirs by applying for a job too far away from home. They put the area of town in the posting to help cut down on the amount of calls and resumes they would receive without it. A data entry job scam will not have anything that gives you town information in the posting.
- There is no way to reach them. Job postings have a name and a phone number as a point of reference. If it is a blind posting, it may just give an email address or tell you to send it to Human Resources. A data entry business scam may just have job information and nothing else.
- Starting date. Data entry opportunity scams want you to start today. Most employers know that the process will take a few weeks, so they don’t appear like they will have to close until you get there. If you don’t give notice, you aren’t the type of employee they want. There is not a real job waiting for you with scam artists so they are unconcerned about that part.
The job you see on the job board will sound very appealing. In today’s economy, there are a lot of people who need jobs. Data entry job scams are too good to be true and you will begin to be able to point them out from real jobs. They will provide you all of the positives a job like that would have and you will no doubt be excited. You will be so excited that you will get your resume together and email it to them straight away. You will feel confident that you will receive a call back. This type of listing gives false hope to the person who applies. And once they do apply, they are hit with all types of spam in their email and even at the home address that they put on the CV.
